Hi, welcome to Redeem the Commute. I’m Ryan, your host for the daily challenges. This week’s topic is part of our series called Jesus Is… where we’re trying to learn about the identity of Jesus, through studying some key stories in the Bible.

Our daily challenges are meant to help you explore what it means to follow Jesus, even if you don’t have a lot of time. We have a rhythm that keeps us in sync, even if we’re not a community that meets together in person regularly. Every Monday we introduce the week’s idea. Every Tuesday we study it in the Bible. Every Wednesday we see how that challenges and transforms our thinking on the topic. Thursdays we try to apply and live it out. Friday is a day for prayer and reflection before we take a rest on Saturday, and Sundays we meet together with others in community.

One Winter in university, I was studying for an important midterm in an electronics class. Midterms were typically held in the evening. Diligent student that I was, I skipped class that morning to study for the midterm in the evening.

I was pretty proud of myself, for prioritizing efficiently to devote the necessary time to getting a good grade. Why go to class when you can use that time to study? Very smart.

Around noon, one of my housemates came home, and rudely interrupted my studying.

“Hey, how did it go?”, he asked. I replied, “How did what go?” His answer was, “The midterm! Weren’t you there?”

Apparently the midterm was in class, and while I thought I was studying to ace it, I completely missed it instead!

At the time tragic…all that work preparing for…well…nothing! I’d missed the very thing I was working towards.

If only I’d taken a second look at the syllabus to see what time the midterm would be – but instead had to desperately plead with the prof for a second chance.

How could I have missed something so important, and so well communicated? It happens.

This week we’ll study something that was missed by pretty much the entire world. While God was standing in front of them, people didn’t notice until it was too late.

Question: What important meeting, event or exam have you missed, that should have been obvious?
